*Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and two other men remained in police custody on Wednesday, amid conflicting accounts of gunfire near a senior police officer’s home and the reported discovery of a handgun in their vehicle.*

**GEORGETOWN —** Police and Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed have given sharply conflicting accounts of a late-night incident in Kitty involving gunfire near the home of a senior police officer, the reported recovery of what police described as an unlicensed handgun and the arrest of Mohamed and two other men.

The Guyana Police Force identified the other men as **Mario Mohamed, 25, and Eugene Thorne, 35**, both of Timehri, East Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on October 12 near the Barr Street home of **Senior Superintendent Prem Narine**, head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch and a witness in the extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.

Police said they were investigating the alleged **discharge of a loaded firearm with intent** and **possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence**.

No charges arising from the Kitty incident had been publicly confirmed as of Thursday midday.

### What police say happened

According to the Guyana Police Force, Narine reported seeing a black Toyota Allion, registration **PXX 5300**, travelling slowly past his residence at approximately **11:45 p.m.**

The vehicle returned a short time later.

Narine also reported that he had previously seen the vehicle monitoring his home.

Police said that as the car approached for a second time, Narine heard what appeared to be a gunshot.

He took cover and fired several rounds from his service firearm towards the vehicle, which then drove away.

The car was subsequently intercepted at the junction of **Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street**.

Police said a search of the vehicle, conducted in the presence of its occupants, led to the discovery of a **.32 Taurus pistol without a serial number and three live rounds of .32 ammunition**.

Investigators also reported recovering **one spent .32 cartridge casing** on Barr Street, opposite Narine’s residence, and **four spent 9mm cartridge casings**.

Police said the firearm, ammunition and recovered casings were lodged for ballistic examination, while CCTV footage from the area would be reviewed.

The police account does not conclusively establish who fired the shots associated with the recovered cartridge casings.

No ballistic findings had been publicly released as of Thursday midday.

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed speaks during his arrest following the October 12 incident in Kitty, Georgetown.

### Mohamed disputes the police account

Mohamed has denied that he or anyone travelling with him fired a weapon.

In remarks made during a Facebook Live broadcast from Kitty Police Station, he accused police of firing several shots at the vehicle and alleged that officers attempted to kill him.

He also disputed the police account of the vehicle search.

According to Mohamed, officers initially searched the car without finding a weapon. He alleged that a handgun was discovered only later, after the vehicle had been taken to the police station, and claimed that it had been planted.

Mohamed has also alleged that he and the two other men were assaulted during their arrest.

His lawyer, **Siand Dhurjon**, has disputed the police account and denied that Mohamed or his staff fired a weapon near Narine’s residence.

Dhurjon has also questioned the reported location of the handgun beneath the accelerator pedal and the sequence of events surrounding the searches.

Mohamed’s **We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party** has characterised the incident as an assassination attempt on the opposition leader.

The allegations of a planted weapon, assault and attempted assassination have not been established.

### Why was Mohamed near Narine’s home?

Mohamed has said he and his workers went to the area to document what he described as an improper use of state resources, referring to the police presence outside Narine’s private residence.

The Government has presented a different interpretation.

In an official statement issued on **October 13**, it said Mohamed had acknowledged filming Narine’s residence and asserted that gunshots came from the vehicle in which he was travelling.

Mohamed and his defence deny that anyone in the vehicle fired a weapon.

The Government’s assertion has not been established by publicly released forensic findings.

### The government response

The Government described Narine as a **critical witness** in the extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father.

It said the State has an obligation to protect witnesses participating in judicial proceedings and warned against interference with the justice system.

The Government also said the **United States Department of Justice** was being kept informed of developments.

### Why Narine’s role matters

Narine is a witness in the extradition proceedings involving **Azruddin Mohamed and Nazar Mohamed**.

Those proceedings concern a separate legal matter from the Kitty investigation.

The Court of Appeal has reserved its ruling on the Mohameds’ constitutional challenge to the **Fugitive Offenders Act**.

The extradition proceedings remain ongoing.

Narine’s role explains why the Government has framed the incident as a witness-protection concern.

### Custody and investigation

Mohamed’s party said **Azruddin Mohamed, Mario Mohamed and Eugene Thorne remained in police custody on Wednesday**.

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition has called for scrutiny of the initial search, the chain of custody of the vehicle, the origin of the firearm and the preservation of CCTV and forensic evidence.

No further official confirmation of the men’s custody or charging status was available as of Thursday midday.

Ballistic findings and CCTV results have not been publicly released.

### What remains unresolved

Several central questions remain unanswered:

- Was a shot fired from the vehicle carrying Mohamed?
- Who fired first?
- What do the ballistic examinations show?
- Was the .32 pistol already inside the vehicle during the initial search?
- When and where was the firearm actually recovered?
- What does CCTV footage show about the interception and searches?
- Will charges be filed arising from the incident?

The available accounts leave key aspects of the incident unresolved.

Forensic findings, CCTV evidence and any subsequent court proceedings may help establish what happened.
