How to read Guyana's Natural Resource Fund monthly report
The balance, oil revenues, investment income and transfers measure different movements in the fund — and should not be read as the same thing.
GEORGETOWN — Guyana's Natural Resource Fund monthly report contains several large figures, but they describe different parts of how money moves through the fund.
The latest monthly report listed by the Ministry of Finance covers the position as at August 31, 2026. It shows that the NRF ended the month with approximately G$1.02 trillion, up from an opening balance of about G$907.1 billion.
That closing balance is not the same as Guyana's oil revenue for the month.
In August, the fund recorded approximately G$161.9 billion in profit oil receipts, along with about G$20.8 million from a signature bonus. No royalty receipt was recorded for that month. The fund also earned approximately G$2.85 billion in investment income during August. That is income generated from assets held by the NRF, rather than a payment from oil production.
On the other side of the ledger, approximately G$52.1 billion was transferred from the NRF to the Consolidated Fund during the month.
That transfer shows money leaving the NRF and entering the government's central account. It does not, by itself, identify which road, school, hospital, programme or other expenditure the money ultimately financed. Connecting NRF withdrawals to specific spending requires separate budget and expenditure records.
The same distinction matters when reading zeros in the monthly statement. A zero under royalties for August means no royalty payment was recorded in that month; it does not mean Guyana received no royalties during 2026.
The Ministry of Finance presents the report in thousands of Guyana dollars and on a cash basis, so readers should also pay attention to the units before interpreting the figures.
For readers, the simplest way to understand the report is to separate four questions:
What came in?
Oil revenues and other receipts.
What did the fund earn?
Investment income.
What was transferred out?
Money moved to the Consolidated Fund.
What remained?
The closing balance at the end of the month.
