Brazilians are voting today in a presidential run-off between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, after a campaign shaped by the cost of living, public security and the country's political direction.

Lula, of the Workers' Party (PT), is seeking re-election and a fourth term overall. Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and is contesting the presidency for the first time.

### A close first round

Neither candidate won the majority of valid votes needed for an outright victory in the October 4 first round. Figures from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) placed Flávio Bolsonaro first with 47.03 per cent, about 56.1 million votes, and Lula second with 45.16 per cent, about 53.9 million.

About 158.7 million Brazilians are eligible to vote, according to the TSE.

### Final survey points to a narrow race

The last CNT/MDA survey, released on Saturday, placed Flávio Bolsonaro at 50.7 per cent of valid votes and Lula at 49.3 per cent. The gap is within the survey's margin of error of 2.2 percentage points. MDA interviewed more than 2,000 voters in person between October 21 and 23; the survey is registered with the TSE under number BR-02136/2026.

Such surveys measure voting intentions before election day. They do not determine the result.

### Competing priorities

Lula has campaigned on social programmes, support for household incomes and national sovereignty. Flávio Bolsonaro has made tougher action against organised crime the centre of his campaign, alongside a conservative agenda.

Lula's running mate is Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB). Flávio Bolsonaro's running mate is federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar (PL), of the north-eastern state of Alagoas.

### What it means for Guyana

The vote comes as Guyana and Brazil expand cooperation in agriculture and transport, particularly with Roraima, the northern Brazilian state whose border town of Bonfim faces Lethem across the Takutu River.

In April, the Ministry of Agriculture reported talks between Minister Zulfikar Mustapha and a delegation of Brazilian investors on large-scale agricultural opportunities. The ministry described the Linden to Lethem road as a direct land link with northern Brazil, expected to cut transport time and costs and connect Brazilian markets with Guyana's ports.

In a joint statement issued during the Roraima Governor's visit to Georgetown in July 2025, President Dr Irfaan Ali and Governor Antonio Olivério Garcia de Almeida agreed to intensify efforts to complete the second phase of the Linden to Lethem road and to improve customs and immigration procedures at the Lethem–Bonfim crossing.

These cross-border initiatives were agreed with Roraima's state government. How the next federal administration in Brasília approaches them has yet to be set out.

### Voting ends at 4 p.m. Guyana time

Voting runs nationwide from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time, which is 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Guyana. In Roraima, which shares Guyana's time zone, polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time.

The TSE will publish results progressively after 5 p.m. Brasília time (4 p.m. in Guyana). Partial returns show how the count is progressing; the official tally determines the winner. The next president takes office on January 5, 2027.
