**GEORGETOWN —** Guyana’s Ministry of Education says 954 Grade 12 and Grade 13 students received a combined G$81.09 million under the government’s 2026 Because We Care Cash Grant programme.

The ministry released the figures on Tuesday, October 13, confirming that the payments were distributed on October 2.

Each student received G$85,000, comprising:

- G$60,000 under the Because We Care Student Grant
- G$20,000 in newly introduced transportation support
- G$5,000 as a uniform voucher allowance

## Final phase of the rollout

The Grade 12 and 13 payments followed earlier distributions to students at other grade levels in public and private schools across Guyana.

Education Minister Sonia Parag visited distribution sites at Diamond Secondary School and Queen’s College on October 2, according to the government's Department of Public Information.

The wider 2026 grant programme is supported by a G$17.5 billion budget allocation.

## What changed in 2026

The core Because We Care grant increased from G$50,000 to G$60,000 this year, while the government introduced an additional G$20,000 annual transportation grant.

Together with the G$5,000 uniform allowance, the combined package rose from G$55,000 to G$85,000 per eligible student.

The government says the assistance is intended to help families meet school-related expenses.

## Examination fees covered separately

The cash grants are distinct from government support for CSEC and CAPE examination fees.

Under the 2026 arrangements, the government covers examination fees for up to eight subjects or units for eligible students in public and private schools.

According to government half-year reporting, G$853.3 million was spent on examination-fee support, covering 13,071 CSEC students and 666 CAPE students.

The figures refer to different groups: the 954 students received the Grade 12 and 13 cash grants, while the 666 CAPE students were reported as beneficiaries of examination-fee support.
